How PraiSync works

Getting started

PraiSync shows the song the band is playing, live, on every phone. One person, the Director, controls which song and section is showing, and everyone else follows.

The bar at the bottom keeps to a few buttons:

  • Live: follow along with the Director. Nothing to press. The small arrow beside it opens Director, where you control what everyone sees.
  • Practice: rehearse any setlist on your own, with a metronome.
  • Chat: talk with everyone in your group.
  • More: opens the menu, with Songs and Setlists (tap a name to open it in Practice), Settings, Help and the rest.

More opens the menu: Songs, Setlists, Settings and Help. (The site admin also has Admin there.)

Signing in and your account

Everyone needs an account to use PraiSync. There is no password: type your username (or your email) and we send a 6-digit code to the email address of your account. A new email creates your account, and the first time you are asked for your name and to choose a username.

  • Your name shows at the top of the Menu, and Log out is at the bottom. Tap your name to open your Profile: change your name, username, birthday, church, role and a small photo. Menu shows Log in when nobody is signed in.
  • You stay signed in on your phone until you log out. The Live view still opens with no internet.
  • The code works for 15 minutes. If it doesn't arrive, check spam, or tap Send a new code.
Your church group and who can change what

Everything in PraiSync (songs, setlists, the live view, chat) belongs to your church group, and only people in the group can see it. The person who creates the group is its admin.

  • Joining: the easiest way is to scan your church's QR code (or open its link): you sign in, and the group code is already filled in. Otherwise, after you sign in, type your church's group code (a short word like thob, or thob123) and tap Request to join. Your group admin approves you in My Band (in the Menu); a number there shows how many people are waiting. The admin can also add you directly by your username or email address. If you start a group yourself, you are its admin: in My Band you can change the group code, and show the QR code or share the join link.
  • Everyone in the group can see all songs and setlists, use Live and Practice, broadcast a song, and control the live view. Anyone can be the Director.
  • Adding and editing: anyone can add songs and setlists. You can edit or delete the ones you added; the admin can change all of them.
  • Admin only: adding and removing people (up to 20 in a group), on the group page. Everyone can see the list of members on the group page.
Group chat

The Chat tab at the bottom is one conversation for everyone in your church group, and only your group can see it. New messages appear at once, and a number on the tab shows how many you haven't read.

  • Type in the box and tap the arrow to send. On a computer, Enter sends and Shift+Enter starts a new line.
  • Tap one of your own messages to delete it. The group admin can delete anyone's.
  • The chat shows the latest 200 messages.
For musicians: Live and Practice

Live shows the whole song, each section once. The section the Director is on is outlined and scrolls into view when it changes. A small bar at the bottom shows the order of the song (Intro → Verse → Chorus …) with the current step highlighted. During the last bar of a section, the next section's name blinks so you can get ready. If the Director's connection drops, the song stays on your screen and a message appears, so you can scroll to your place.

Practice lets you pick a setlist and step through its songs. Every section of the song is on the page, in the order it is played. Tap a section name to jump to it.

Mode (on both pages) changes what you see, and is remembered on your phone:

  • Keys/Guitar: the chords in the setlist's key.
  • Acoustic: the chords shifted down by the song's capo (set on the setlist), with the capo number shown next to the Mode box.
  • Singer: lyrics only.

Long lines wrap onto a second row, with the chords kept above their words. You can set the smallest text size in Settings. If the setlist has a YouTube playlist, a link to it shows next to the Mode box.

For the Director

Open Director. Pick a setlist at the top (the newest is chosen for you). Then:

  • Next and the back arrow beside it move one step through the song's order. The row of section buttons shows the same order, so a chorus played twice appears twice. Tap one to jump straight to it.
  • The arrows at the song title change song. The song you are on is highlighted in the setlist order.
  • Broadcast (a button on the Songs page) shows any song to everyone right away, for a song nobody planned. The page then says "Temporary Broadcast". Picking a setlist again goes back to normal.
  • One director at a time. If somebody is already the director when you open Director, you are asked whether to request the role; they see "wants to take over director role, agree?" and answer Yes or No. If they say Yes, the role is yours and they move to the Live view. If they have closed the app or lost signal for about a minute, the role is free and you just take it. Only the director can change what everyone sees, and that includes Broadcast.
  • If the internet drops, your screen still moves when you tap. Everyone else catches up when it comes back.

A Bluetooth page turner or foot pedal that sends keys can do Next and Previous for you (see Settings below).

Adding and editing songs

On Songs (as Director), tap Add New Song. Fill in the title, key, time signature and tempo, then paste or type the chords and lyrics. Each section starts with a tag in square brackets. Put a chord line above each lyric line:

[Verse bar=8]
G D Em C
This is the day that the Lord has made [2]

[Chorus bar=4 repeat=2 notes="drums only"]
C G
Sing it out
[Repeat Chorus bar=2 transpose=+2]
  • bar=8 is how many bars the section lasts. The metronome uses it to move on by itself, and to count the bars.
  • [2] or {2} at the end of a line says that line takes 2 bars (it lights up while the metronome plays). Fractions and decimals work: 1/2, 1.5, 1 1/2.
  • [Repeat Chorus] plays an earlier section again without typing it twice. You can give a repeat its own bar= or transpose=.
  • repeat=2 plays the section twice in a row, so it shows (and plays) twice in the order. It also works on a repeat: [Repeat Chorus repeat=2].
  • notes="drums only" adds a short note beside the section's name: Chorus (drums only). Put the note in quotes, up to 60 characters. The note is only for reading: the voice cue still says "Chorus". A repeat can have its own note.
  • x2 after a chord line shows a ×2 badge.

Pasting a chart from another website turns lines like "Chorus" or "Verse 1:" into tags, and repeated sections into repeats. If you paste into an empty box, a line under it offers the key it detected: tap OK to use it, or ignore it.

Setlists

On Setlists (as Director), tap Add New Setlist. Give it a name, date and singer, then add songs and use the arrows to put them in order. For each song you can set:

  • Transpose: moves the chords up or down in semitones; the new key is shown.
  • Capo: for Acoustic mode (the chords are shown that many steps lower).
  • Offset: a faster or slower tempo than the song's own.

The setlist can also have double-time click (below) and an optional YouTube playlist link for musicians to listen to the songs.

Metronome and voice cues

On the Director and Practice pages, the play button starts the metronome. It counts you in for two bars (the voice says the first section's name, such as "Intro", then 1, 2, 3, 4), then clicks at the song's tempo with a higher click on beat 1. A bar counter shows where you are. When a section reaches its bar= length, the next one starts by itself; after the last section it stops.

  • 2× appears for songs under 85 BPM. It adds a click between the beats for tighter timing; the counting stays at the real tempo. It is saved on the setlist.
  • Voice cue (Settings): uses the church's own recordings, the same for every church group. When a song starts it says the first section's name, then counts 1, 2, 3, 4. Before each next section it says that section's name two bars ahead, then counts 1, 2, 3, 4 on the bar before it starts.
  • Download click track (under the song title on the Practice page, and on each song in the Songs list): makes an MP3 of the song's metronome with the count-in and the voice cues, in the song's play order, so a band can practise along with it. It builds on your phone, lets you listen, then saves it. The button is red when the song has no tempo or a section has no bar length: tap it to see what is missing, and add a length to each section tag, for example [Verse bar=8].
  • Limitation: the phone's own voice is never used. If a section name has no recording, it is not said, and only the 1, 2, 3, 4 count is heard before that section. The numbers are also built from recordings, so a numbered section such as "Verse 2" needs both the word and the number recorded. The Admin page shows which recordings are still missing.
  • Lock-screen and headphone play/pause buttons control the metronome too.
Settings and page turner

Settings are saved on your own phone:

  • Voice cue on or off (the recorded section names and the count).
  • Metronome volume, with a test button.
  • Font size: the size of the song text, the same for every section and every song. A line too long for your screen wraps onto another row.
  • Page turner / foot pedal: pair a Bluetooth remote that works like a keyboard, then press its buttons on the Settings page to see what it sends. Arrow keys and Page Up/Down are Next and Previous by default; use Learn to choose other keys. On the Director page it moves between sections; on Practice it does too, and carries on into the next song at the end.
Installing and offline use

To use PraiSync like an app: on iPhone, open it in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. On Android, open the browser menu and tap Install app. The screen stays on while you use the Director, Live and Practice pages.

The app keeps a copy of your songs and setlists on the phone, so the Live view still opens with no internet and shows the last song. Open the Director or Practice page once while online so the recorded voice clips are saved too.

Something not working?
  • Blank or "Something went wrong" page: the app updates itself and reloads once. If it stays stuck, close it fully and reopen. Your songs are safe on the server.
  • "Director offline or connection lost" on the Live view: the Director's phone or yours lost the connection. Scroll to your place; it follows again when it returns.
  • No click sound on iPhone: turn the ring/silent switch to ring and raise the volume. Check the metronome volume in Settings.
  • Can't hear the voice cue: turn Voice cue off and on in Settings; it says "Voice cue on". If you hear nothing, check the phone's volume.
  • Page turner does nothing: press its buttons on the Settings page. If no key name appears, it may send screen taps instead of keys.
  • Lists are empty: check the internet connection and reload. A red notice at the top explains if the live data cannot be reached.
